Losing America: Confronting a Reckless and Arrogant Presidency

"Reading a passage from Bob Woodward's recent book, Byrd quotes Bush as saying, " ‘I do not need to explain why I say things. That's the interesting thing about being the president. Maybe somebody needs to explain to me why they say something, but I don't feel like I owe anybody an explanation.' "

Byrd bristles. "Such hubris," he said. "Unmitigated arrogance. He's talking about the people here. That one little paragraph explains better than I could ever explain the contempt this man shows for the sovereignty of the people of this country.""

I think this is THE book to read. Buy it, and your "vote" will be counted. Now, while Byrd lives, show him we heard his voice.

I wonder why it took a senator to extract information from Woodward's book that exposes a self condemnation of the president, merely by repeating his own words.
Those words were in the book: how could that not be the stuff of headlines: that defines the imperial presidency, the monarch, which was utterly repudiated by the very formation of the country, it sparked the revolution, it was THE inspiriation for Thomas Paine who rallied a nation with "Common Sense".
The fact that this quote is NOT well known is a failure of the media, and a failure of the political process: did no Democratic Party operative read the book and not find it instructive?

Come on. It's because most Americans just don't care! The only reason Bush may lose the election is because Kerry is promising to change the TV programming.

Well then we should just move to Canada.

As for the quote, this is the complaint of many who see Michael Moore's movie. If Michael Moore is a biased propagandist (and he may well be) why is it left to him to give us the news? Why isn't our media doing their job? If they were then the Michael Moores of the world would not have the ammunition.

Most Americans do care, but they have neither the time nor the means to do anything about it, except vote, and even then they may not have the time. Then, the media informs them that their vote will not count, except in the contested states. You wanna vote for Bush in NY State: go right ahead. You wanna vote of Nader or Kucinich: that won't count either.
Some governmental organizations are experimenting with proportional representation and instant run off voting, and I would like to see the results, and see how robust the solution is.
When it comes to really big contests, people will put live challenging efforts into having it their way, so any solution will be attacked, and attacked vigorously.
We have the power of the computer to run simulations: why could we not run a couple of hundred iterations on various changes to the voting laws: instant registration, instant run off, and being unimaginative, I've run our already.
But no, we could certainly simulate various government assisted housing plans, the effects of increased forestry. Of course, each result will be attacked.
