July Surprise?

The Bush administration denies it has geared the war on terrorism to the electoral calendar. "Our attitude and actions have been the same since September 11 in terms of getting high-value targets off the street, and that doesn't change because of an election," says National Security Council spokesman Sean McCormack. But The New Republic has learned that Pakistani security officials have been told they must produce HVTs by the election. According to one source in Pakistan's powerful Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), "The Pakistani government is really desperate and wants to flush out bin Laden and his associates after the latest pressures from the U.S. administration to deliver before the [upcoming] U.S. elections."

There must be 100 activites that are scheduled with the election dates in mind. Consider the lesson learned when Iran held the hostages until there was a new president: you did NOT see Reagan saying "bullshit: free them now. You will gain NO favors from me by delaying their release"
Whether it is a financial report, a presentation before customers, Thanksgiving, whatever, all operations are based with the calendar in mind.
If there were no election, nothing at all would get done.
The fault is not with our stars... despite the foreknowledge, there is not a person, democrat or republican, that will not be swayed by the capture of Bin Laden. And hell, if they don't capture him, they can say "we are getting really close" and if they need to, they can bomb some safehouse and spent a few weeks looking at the bones... with a false report that "we really think we got him!"
We are a nation of masses that lurch from side to side as if on a runaway train.
