Interesting exercise: ask people in your family, people you know, work with. I think you'll find that that 50% figure is a lot closer to home than you think.
For one thing, few people will express certainty on such a monumental question: they will hedge. For another thing, very few people know enough about biology to understand evolutionary processes.
