So what was it?

What was it that brought the tsunami victims into the forethought of Americans and others around the world? There are crises in Africa, Central America, the Caribbean, why did this disaster really provoke a response (one that surprised the media and the vacationer-in-chief) Any ideas?

1) Almost no politics
2) Bush did NOT wake up: he was told. It was a pittance. I promise you, Bush does not give a shit. No money on Iraq reconstruction got spend, and not one penny of AIDS money got delivered.
3) The people are not black
4) It was big, fast, and not full of starving black people.
5) Iraq was getting stale
6) There were tourists (white people)
7) The Europeans care: we're just playing catch up.
Note some truths:
8) The media is looking really really hard for some great disaster footage.
1) The numbers really aren't there: that many are dead in Iraq alone. That many are displaced in Darful
2) Shit happens
3) In a couple of weeks, we won't care. Unless we can hype some great outbreaks of disease.
