Sales and Selling

I've been thinking about sales, selling and marketing after attending a horse related event organized Pat Parelli. The Parelli corporation is an amazing marketing and selling machine and the influence they conjure over the folks in their attendance is quite amazing to behold.

Pondering this experience, I was thinking that the process of selling could be defined as:

Selling: The process of overcoming an individual's natural inclination to allocate their financial resources in a rational, practical manner by eliciting from them a powerful emotional response stemming from an unmet need and connecting fulfillment of this need with a product or service.

Great observation. I think that should be the definition that everyone keeps in their head on a daily basis. That includes while watching TV, etc. Here is an interesting article on spending money that I read today.

That is a well structured definition. It is worth memorizing

and it could use refining...
as to address the manipulation by which a need, unmet expect by this product, is created. That the creation of this need is accomplished by the creative exploitation of human emotions, reactions to pictures, sound, movement, color, faces and elaborate theatrical presentation.
Note, too, that the actual sale my not take place, dispite the deep placement of the need, which may cause great injury to the target.
Thus, one must consider a notion of ethical sales, restrained sales, appropriate sales.
In this process, one cannot ignore the corporation, which is granted, by judgement of the supreme court, to be a person and protected by the bill of rights and amendments.
